Student Lifecycle Relationship Management
The University of Illinois serves students and their families at each stage of their relationship: as prospective students, as enrolled students, and as alumni. Fulfilling this mission requires decisions informed by complex and innovative analysis of data regarding student applications, admissions, enrollment, grades, financial aid and demographic attributes.
Forecasting Admissions At the University of Illinois Chicago, the largest university in the Chicago area, deans of the 15 colleges need to be able to forecast and actively manage the competitive admissions process. The Office of Admissions and Records Administration creates a series of over 100 reports to share with deans. Deans are able to make decisions informed by data, and to monitor the results of those decisions, including:
- Number of acceptances by college to anticipate yield and adjust tele-counseling efforts
- Undergrad application detail by major to manage admissions for high-demand programs
- Percent of web applications vs. total applications by graduate, undergraduate, and ethnicity to determine entry and access to the application process
- Analysis of Predicted GPA by ranges for college decision zones
- Special action admissions to anticipate thresholds
- Ethnicity applications and admissions
Analyzing the Impact of Online Education
The University of Illinois Springfield, a campus comprised of students and faculty of various ages, backgrounds, and ethnicity, is one of Illinois' largest providers of online education. The Office of the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs needs to analyze the use of online courses, to determine whether these courses replace classroom instruction, or are adding to the traditional course load. This analysis is accomplished by producing trend and change reports of online course participants using Business Objects tools and data from the Data Warehouse.
Student Retention
With over 40,000 students in 16 colleges, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign offers students a broad range of academic program options. Undergraduate admission is highly selective, and retaining students after admission is a priority for colleges. The College of Business had a perception that they were losing students through transfers to other colleges. Using the Business Intelligence environment, they were able to perform analysis and determine that retention was not an issue at the time. Now they have the ability to monitor retention on an ongoing basis and take appropriate action.
